Guindon, a former marine, interned with the Prince William County Police Department during graduate school and joined the police force in 2015. After training, Guindon took some time off for “personal reasons” before being sworn in to the department on Friday.

A Virginia police officer by the name of Ashley Guindon was fatally shot last Saturday, during her first shift at the Prince William County Police department. Guindon, 28, was responding to a 911 call in Woodbridge, VA, along with two other officers. Upon arriving on the scene, all three officers were shot. The officers were taken to the hospital, where Guindon died due to injuries. The other two officers are said to be recovering.

After entering, officers found Hamilton’s wife, Crystal Hamilton, 29, dead inside the house. The suspect and his wife were said to be engaged in a verbal argument which escalated physically. It was the suspect’s wife who made the 911 call before she was allegedly killed by her husband. The couple also has an 11-year old son, who fled the house before the shooting occurred, and is currently being cared for by family and friends.

According to Chief Steve Hudson of the William Country Police Department, the suspect, Ronald Williams Hamilton, 32, is accused of shooting the officers upon their arrival to his house just after 5:30pm on Saturday. Hamilton surrendered when more officers arrived.

The suspect, who is also an active duty Army staff sergeant of the Joint Staff Support Center at the Pentagon, has been charged with both first-degree murder, of his wife, and capitol murder, of officer Ashley Guindon. According to commonwealth attorney Paul Ebert, hearings will be begin April 18.

Chief Hudson speaks highly of Guidon, saying, ”We were struck by her passion to do this job.” ”She couldn’t get it out of her blood. She clearly had a passion to serve others that went beyond herself.”

Here is a tweet, welcoming Guindon to the department, just one day before the incident.

Chief Hudson also declared at a news conference on Sunday that “This is a sad day for everybody in this room, a sad day for law enforcement.” Rest in Peace, Ashley Guindon, and every officer who has lost their life for the noble cause of protecting citizens.
